Masters program In Malaria Modelling

Building the next generation of malaria modelers in Africa for sustainable public health policies

Program Background

Overview of the MaModAfrica Master’s Program

Our master’s program not only equips students with advanced skills in applied infectious disease modeling but also fosters a collaborative, transnational approach, ensuring that graduates contribute effectively to the global fight against malaria with the following key objectives:

Objective 1: Increase Academic Training in Malaria Modeling

Strengthen Masters programs through applied mathematical modeling curricula, training of 30 Masters students, project supervision embedded within National Malaria Control Programs (NMCP), fostering a mutually beneficial relationship in tackling malaria in partner countries over three years.

Objective 2: Bridging the Gap Between Academic Modeling and Operational Needs

Deliver targeted training on principles of mathematical modeling, geo-spatial modeling, and malaria epidemiology, conduct audience-specific skill development workshops for students, academic researchers, and National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) staff, fostering collaboration to enhance evidence based problem solving.

Objective 3 Create Collaborative Transnational Ecosystem

Leverage the experience of partner organizations to establish a network of African disease modelers, promoting expertise sharing, including fostering academic exchange through online platforms, like webinars, conferences, workshops, and teleconference seminars, in addition to facilitating regular interactions between National Malaria Control Program(NMCP) and academic researchers, creating a community of practice to share knowledge.

Courses Offered

The following Courses in Applied Infectious Disease Modeling were taught in academic year 2023-2024 at AIMS:

Information to applicants

The AIMS Structured Master’s Program runs over three semesters. The requisite skills phase of the AIMS course builds a standard core set of problem-solving skills: estimation, computation, approximation, modelling, data analysis and statistics. The elective review phase allows students to apply these skills in some of the most exciting areas of science.

During the final phase of the AIMS course students do a research project and write a scientific report under the supervision of an expert researcher on a topic of their choice. Research initiated in these projects often develops into further postgraduate research work after AIMS.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Epidemiology or any science/engineering discipline with a significant mathematics component.

Why study at AIMS?

  • Renowned lecturers from Africa and worldwide, supported by a team of resident tutors.
  • Students and lecturers live on campus to encourage a 24-hour learning environment.
  • Group work and highly interactive learning setting.
  • Emphasis on programming and Data Science with 24/7 access to computer labs and high-speed internet.
  • A diverse student body from across Africa.
  • Candidates are highly employable and quickly join higher learning institutions upon graduation
