Call for Application: AIMS – ONS Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate and Health
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centers of excellence for postgraduate training in mathematical sciences, research, and public engagement in STEM. The project focuses on developing a comprehensive statistical analysis framework and unified standards for reporting climate change impacts on health in Rwanda. The project emphasizes multidisciplinary
collaboration, active knowledge sharing, and the development of contextually relevant and scientifically rigorous indicators. Key health topics under investigation include injury and mortality from extreme
weather events, water-borne diseases, zoonoses, air pollution and respiratory illness, and non-communicable diseases.
Position Overview:
We seek a highly motivated and skilled young scientist to join the project team as a Postdoctoral Fellow. You will play a pivotal role in supporting the project, contributing your expertise in statistics, and ideally possessing domain knowledge in climate change and health. This is a two-year position with a unique opportunity to impact the measurement and reporting of climate change impacts on health in Rwanda and beyond.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and expert groups to come up with metrics for analyzing the intersections between climate change and health, with a specific focus on injury and mortality from extreme weather events, water-borne diseases, zoonoses, air pollution and respiratory illness, and non-communicable diseases.
- Contribute statistical expertise to developing indicators that will be incorporated into a comprehensive statistical analysis framework for assessing climate-related health impacts.
- Generate detailed metadata for selected indicators, including methodologies, reproducible code, and data sources, ensuring transparency and replicability.
- Maintain a comprehensive log of the research process, documenting steps taken, challenges faced, time allocation, and other relevant information to facilitate project transparency and knowledge sharing.
- May co-supervise masters and Ph.D. students at AIMS, depending on experience.
- Publicly disseminate research results through high-quality peer-reviewed publications.
Qualifications
- Received a doctorate from an internationally recognized program not more than five years ago.
- Research expertise appropriate to the appointment domain. This could be statistics or related fields.
- Strong statistical analysis and modeling background, preferably applied to climate change, health, or both.
- Proficiency in data analysis software, statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Python), and data visualization tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas
- effectively to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, a commitment to knowledge sharing, and active participation in project discussions.
- At least one paper published in an international, peer-reviewed journal.
