The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of Centres of Excellence for post-graduate training, research and public engagement in mathematical sciences. The network comprises six AIMS Centres located in five countries. One of these is the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre (AIMS RIC): a research-oriented Centre facilitating high-quality research through creation of a world class environment that fosters creativity and innovation.

The Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) Project


Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through Koblenz University in Germany, the Knowledge and Technology Transfer (KTT) project is aimed at analysing, developing, and implementing professional structures and services dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and driving innovation. Additionally, the project aims to further develop these structures and services into a comprehensive strategy for establishing an AIMS Excellence Centre for KTT. Ultimately, the KTT project seeks to engender an “AIMS way” of translating scientific advances into benefits for all of society, underpinned by a robust understanding of relevant organizational structures and dynamics.


AIMS RIC is looking for a Senior Scientist to lead the technical aspects of the KTT project.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research and analysis to identify potential areas of KTT in alignment with AIMS research areas.
  • Lead the development and establishment of the KTT framework, structures, and services.
  • Lead the development and delivery of academic and professional courses relevant to KTT.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders within the KTT ecosystem.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of the technical aspects of the KTT Project.
  • Provide guidance and support to the project team on best practices for KTT.
  • Conduct regular evaluations and assessments to measure the project impact, identify required improvements, and recommend adjustments as needed.
  • Lead the development & implementation of KTT strategy, policies, and initiatives to ensure relevant knowledge, skills, and research outputs developed at AIMS are effectively and efficiently converted into socio-economic value.
  • Collaborate with legal experts to manage intellectual property rights and promote the beneficial use of research results.
  • Collaborate with AIMS RIC’s communication team to disseminate information about the project’s progress, outcomes, and key milestones.
  • Advise AIMS RIC management on all knowledge and technology transfer aspects.
  • Lead periodic meetings with the project team.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ph.D. in mathematics, computer science, engineering, or related disciplines
  • A scientific background in one or more of the following fields: Mathematical Modeling, Data Science, Quantum Science, AI, internet of things.
  • Business development experience
  • Experience in successfully working with academic staff in exploiting research, which is proven through a track record of conducting high-impact research, demonstrated through publications and project outcomes.
  • Knowledge and experience in intellectual property management is a plus.
  • Ability to understand and communicate (written and oral) complex scientific and technology concepts to a range of audiences.
  • Interest in capacity building of young African scientists.

Working Conditions

  • To be based in Kigali, Rwanda.
  • Travel within and out of Africa
  • Available to work outside of normal business hours to respond to AIMS demands as may be needed from time to time.
