The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of Centres of Excellence for post-graduate training, research, and public engagement in mathematical sciences. The network comprises six AIMS Centres located in five countries. One of these is the AIMS Research and Innovation Centre (AIMS RIC), a research-oriented Centre facilitating high-quality research by creating a world-class environment that fosters creativity and innovation. Program Background

As a Knowledge and Technology Transfer Officer, your job area will involve entrepreneurship education, liaising with industry, bridging the gap between research and practice, innovation, commercialization of research, and work-integrated learning.

The Knowledge and Technology Transfer Officer will assist in analyzing, developing, and implementing professional structures and services that translate theoretical research into practical outcomes. They will also support the commercialization of AIMS innovation and intellectual property through activities such as patenting, licensing, and establishing spin-off companies, all for the benefit of society. The Officer will facilitate the transition of AIMS graduates into employment and entrepreneurship by establishing partnerships with industries to secure internships, research opportunities, and jobs. They will also
contribute to delivering entrepreneurship development programs at the Centre and provide training in entrepreneurship and other mathematical sciences courses to AIMS students based on their expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and establishment of the KTT framework, structures, and services for effective knowledge and technology transfer.
  • Support the planning and execution of the technical aspects of the KTT Project.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders within the KTT ecosystem in the country and beyond.
  • Coordinate with legal experts to manage intellectual property rights and protect research outcomes through patents and copyrights.
  • Provide training and support to researchers and relevant staff on KTT processes and best practices.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of educational and marketing initiatives such as trainings, Hackathons, workshops, etc.
  • Contribute to the development, negotiation, and follow-up of knowledge transfer agreements, consultancy agreements, licensing contracts, etc., with different stakeholders.
  • Coordinate industry partnerships, including follow-ups with industrial contacts and establishing strategic alliances for KTT.
  • Collaborate with researchers, developers, and external stakeholders to ensure the successful transfer of technology.
  • Support the delivery of entrepreneurship development programs at the Centre.
  • Support AIMS graduates transition to employment through professional skills development and liaison with industry for internships, research, and job opportunities for AIMS students and graduates.
  • Collaborate with AIMS’ communication team to disseminate information about the project progress, outcomes, and key milestones.
  • Report regularly to the senior scientist on the status of the project.
  • Support the KTT project management activities and related administrative tasks.
  • Deliver courses in entrepreneurship and innovation to AIMS students.
  • Deliver courses in mathematical sciences to AIMS students

Skills & Competencies

  • A PhD or master’s degree or equivalent in mathematics, computer science, or other quantitative disciplines.
  • A scientific background in one or more fields: Mathematical Modeling, Data Science, Quantum Science, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
  • Ability to understand and communicate (written and oral) complex science and technology concepts to a range of audiences.
  • Business and entrepreneurship development experience.
  • Experience in a knowledge and technology transfer or related role in academia, research, or industry.
  • Knowledge of KTT processes and tools, including Intellectual Property management, is an added advantage.
  • Interest in building the capacity of young African scientists.

Working Conditions

  • To be based in Kigali, Rwanda.
  • Travel within and out of Africa
  • Available to work outside of regular business hours to respond to AIMS demands that may be needed occasionally.
